Muslims throughout the world seek guidance from Hifz Quran scripture and excite themselves by reading or reciting it. But there are some basic things that we do not know about the Quran. These are the things which even some hafiz and expert Quran reciters do not know about. A few days ago, a question popped into my mind: why is the Quran divided into chapters? I researched it and found some useful information about the chapters in the Quran. So let me reveal the wonderful information that I have gathered about the chapters in the Quran.
What Is A Chapter In The Quran?
What if someone asks you, what is a chapter? Do you know the answer? If not, here is what you need to know.
A chapter refers to a Surah in the Quran. The Holy Quran is divided into a number of chapters (Surahs) and then each surah is divided into different verses. There are 86 chapters in the Quran which are classified as Makki (Meccan). It means that they were revealed in Makkah. While 28 chapters are classified as Madni (Medinan). It means that they were revealed in the city of Madina. These chapters distribute the Quran into a number of parts and make it easier to learn this book.
Is There a Difference Between a Surah and Chapters?
I know many of you know the answer. But still, there are some people who always get confused when they hear either Surah or chapter. They think that they are two separate things. But it is time to say goodbye to your confusion. There is no difference between a chapter and a Surah. The Surah is an Arabic word while the word chapter comes from the English language. Other than that, both words are alternatives to each other.
How Many Chapters Are There In The Quran
There are 114 different chapters in the Quran. They divide the Holy Quran into 114 parts. The length of the chapters is not equal. Some are short while others consist of several Saparas (Also known as Juz). The shortest Surah in the Quran is Surah Kawthar. It consists of only three verses. The longest chapter in the Quran is Surah Al-Baqarah. It has 286 verses and consists of almost 2 and a half Juz. Besides that, there is one chapter in the Quran that you do not start by the name of Allah. That is Surah Tawbah. Other than that, all the chapters in the Quran have to be started with the name of Allah Almighty.
Reasons To Reveal The Quran In Chapters?
You may be wondering what is the reason for which the Quran was revealed in chapters? Why is there a need to divide the Quran into chapters when it is already divided into Manzils? You are not alone. A lot of people do know the reason for revealing the Quran in different chapters. One of the most obvious reasons is that Allah wanted the Quran to be in chapters. Other than that, here are a few possible reasons for which the Holy Quran was revealed in chapters.
Easy To Hifz Quran: It is not easy to Hifz Quran. There are a number of techniques that are used to memorize the Quran. One of the best techniques is to start from the short chapters in the Quran. As there are 114 chapters and they are almost in descending order, it is best to start from the last chapter. It is easier to Hifz Quran when it is in chapters rather than memorizing the full book at once.
To Address Different Problems: The Holy Quran does not only give us religious teachings. It addresses all the aspects of a person’s life. Addressing all the aspects without dividing them into the different chapters would make it quite confusing. So it was necessary to address different aspects of life in different chapters. Besides that, different chapters were revealed in different situations. So, it can also be a cause of the division of the Quran.
To Make It Easier To Recite: When a person starts to learn Quran recitation, it is advised to that person to start learning the recitation from short chapters. So the chapters not only benefit you when you Hifz Quran but they are also a great help when it comes to the recitation of this holy book.
Who Divided The Quran Into Chapters?
The Holy Quran was not divided by any person. It is Allah who decided the place where each verse was to be placed. Whenever Jibreel (Gabriel) brought any verse of the Quran, he would also tell the Holy Prophet about its proper placement in the Quran. Thus, it was not divided later on. Although the Holy Quran was compiled in the form of one volume after the demise of the Holy Prophet, yet it was divided into chapters during his lifetime.
What Are The Other Classifications of the Quran
The Holy Quran is not just divided into different chapters. There are a lot of different classifications of the Quran. Here are a few most common forms of the classification of the Quran.
According To Manzils: There are a total of 7 Manzils in the Quran. They all are roughly the same sizes.
According To Juz: Juz is also known as Para. It divides the Holy Quran into thirty equal parts. There are a total of thirty Juz in the Quran.
According To Verses: There are a total of 6,236 verses in the Quran.
